Leah Shapiro, Program Director
Leah is excited to jump into her third year as Program Director at Santa Cruz Hillel! After graduating from San Francisco State University with a Bachelor's degree in Child and Adolescent Development, Leah went on to live in Israel for 9 months volunteering with low-income children at a preschool and tutoring children at an after school program. Following her 11 years in San Francisco, the Santa Cruz native has loved spending the last two years back in her hometown hanging out with UCSC, Cabrillo, and CSUMB students. In her free time you can find Leah at the beach, taking pictures, swimming, watching/ attending baseball games (go Giants!), and hanging out with friends & family. Leah can't wait to reconnect with returning students and form new relationships with incoming students this year.
Pro tip- don't hesitate to ask Leah to buy you a cup of coffee, believe us, she'll do it!
Michael is an American-Israeli dual citizen excited to enter his first year at Santa Cruz Hillel as an Israel Fellow. Michael did his IDF military service as a combat medic. After three years in the military, Michael took a year off to travel the Americas, where he developed a deep love for photography and storytelling through pictures (check it out: plutchok-photo.com). After traveling Michael completed a undergraduate degree in Communications and started working for international news channels. Now, Michael is ready to embark on a new journey, to learn a new set of skills and experience a new line of work. He's looking forward to learning from students about their Jewish experiences, and sharing his own with you!
